How to Keep Pets Cool in Summer Without AC

Cute puppy dog stretched out on cool tiles. Keeping cat, dogs and pets cool in summer or heat waves.

Cranking the AC is the simplest way to keep your pets cool and safe. However, we understand this is not an option for all homeowners. That’s why our HVAC experts have compiled these tips for keeping your pets cool in the summer without air conditioning.

How To Keep Cats Cool in Summer Without AC

Create Shady Spots

Cats are natural sun-seekers, but too much heat can harm them. Create cool, shaded areas throughout your home using curtains, blinds, or even strategically placed cardboard boxes. Pay special attention to your cat’s favorite lounging spots and provide them with a shady alternative.

Elevated Beds

Invest in raised cat beds that allow air to circulate underneath. These beds lift your cat off the warm floor. Look for beds made of breathable materials like mesh or bamboo.

Cool Treats

Frozen treats are a great way to help your cat cool down and stay hydrated. A simple ice cube will provide your cat with fun and hydration and they paw at it before consuming it.

Freeze your cat’s wet food for a cool, satisfying meal. Always supervise your cat when giving frozen treats. If their frozen wet food contains large frozen pieces, break those up before serving.

Grooming

Excess fur can trap heat and make your cat uncomfortable. Thankfully, this extra fur can be removed through regular brushing. Aim to brush your cat daily during hot weather.

For long-haired breeds, consider a lion cut. This will give your cat a more comfortable coat that still protects their skin from the sun.

Water Stations

Encourage hydration by placing multiple water bowls around your home. Cats often prefer fresh, moving water, so consider investing in a cat water fountain. Place bowls in cool, shaded areas and refresh the water frequently.

How To Keep Dogs Cool in Summer Without AC

Cooling Mats

Specially designed cooling mats can help your dog beat the heat. These mats work by absorbing your dog’s body heat. They are particularly useful for older dogs or those with thick coats.

Be sure to place the mat in a shady spot for optimal comfort. Some mats are self-cooling, while others can be refrigerated for extra cooling power.

Kiddie Pools

A shallow pool in a shaded area can provide a refreshing spot for your pup. Choose a sturdy plastic pool and fill it with just a few inches of water. Introduce your dog to the pool gradually.

If necessary, use treats and praise to create positive associations. Always supervise your dog around water, even if the water is shallow.

Frozen Toys

Fill and freeze a Kong or similar hollow toy with dog-safe treats for a cooling playtime. You can use a mixture of:

  • Plain yogurt
  • Mashed banana
  • Peanut butter (ensure it doesn’t contain xylitol)
  • Frozen wet dog food

These frozen toys provide mental stimulation and help cool your dog from the inside out as they lick and chew.

Indoor Exercise

Shift playtime to cooler parts of the day or indoors to avoid the heat. Early morning or late evening walks are best when temperatures are lower. For indoor play, try games like hide-and-seek, tug-of-war, or puzzle toys that keep your dog mentally and physically engaged without overheating. If you have stairs in your home, playing fetch up and down the stairs can provide good exercise in a cooler environment.

Proper Hydration

Always ensure fresh, cool water is available, and consider adding ice cubes to keep it cold longer. Carry water and a portable bowl on walks, offering your dog frequent drinks. Some dogs enjoy drinking from a hose or sprinkler, which can double as a fun cooling activity. You can make doggy ice pops by freezing low-sodium chicken broth in ice cube trays or Kong toys.

General Tips for Both Cats and Dogs

  1. Damp Towels: Lay out cool towels for your pets to lie on.
  2. Fans: Strategically placed fans can help circulate air.
  3. Cool Tiles: Encourage your pets to rest on cooler surfaces like tile or hardwood floors.
  4. Avoid Hot Pavement: Walk your dogs early in the morning or late in the evening to protect their paws.
  5. Never Leave Pets in Cars: Even with windows cracked, temperatures can quickly become life-threatening.

Limitations of AC Alternatives

While these tips can help, they’re no substitute for proper cooling in extreme heat. If you’re concerned about your pet’s comfort or safety, consider installing a new air conditioning system.

At Crowther Heating & Air Conditioning, we’re not just experts in keeping your home comfortable. We also value every member of your family, including the four-legged ones. Our team will assess your cooling needs and provide clear recommendations.
